Tonight marked the end of the first table-top RPG I have ever participated in. It was based off the show, Heroes, and each character we played had their own powers. Over the year, we watched them go from just basically sketches to full-fledged characters. It was something I looked forward to every week. Now I find myself wondering what I'm going to do without it.
My character, in particular, really grew on me.
Atticus "Chance" Ligeia started out as nothing more than a drunk. His whole concept was taking one of my characters I had already created and blowing his one main vice of drinking way out of proportion. The original Chance works for A.S.A. and drank only while home alone and at night.
This Chance, by contrast, drank all the time. He was constantly drunk and very unhappy sober. He was known orginally as the man who carries around a bottle everywhere.
He started out in the game stealing stuff and sneaking around. At first, he started working for a underground group who were into some shady buisness. In this, they got him a job as a janitor in order to sort of inflitrate the school.
Over the course of the first game, he came up against his sister and a few friends, and that is when he turned from that group and started almost freelancing.
He continued his work as a janitor. The beginning of the new, in-game school year saw the start of a war between the Company and those with powers starting up again. Chance fought to keep himself neutral, not wanting to be tied to either side and not wanting to push his sister into danger.
Over this year, he got himself a girlfriend. No one's really sure how that happened. But he did, and he sobered up just for her. He spent the rest of the game sober, and relatively happy.
He got manipulated, to save his sister's life, but it wasn't enough. He saved her in a bus from going over the edge of a cliff. He loved and lost.
The second to last game's end saw him taken by a company operative. He went willingly only to spare his sister from death. Over the month he was there, he was tortured, beaten, and overall battered. Some was to try and get his powers to enhance and to get to understand it. Some of it was to get information about the groups working against the Company. It was a good thing, for them then, that he didn't join a side.
He managed to escape using his final power, and showed up in the house his sister was staying in. He was paranoid, scarred, and overall insane. He didn't want to be touched by anyone. He didn't want to be looked at. He was quite a sight to see. He shied away from everyone, and, judging by the scars, should've been dead several times before. But the Company kept him alive with the blood from a dead healer, just it was dead blood, so it left scars.
Reluctantly, he agreed to go back to the Company. He witnessed the end of the man who tortured him, and then, as they were leaving, they were confronted by the man that caused his, and Alyra's power to awaken. He was also, come to find out, their father's brother. In a last, final heroic effort to protect his sister, he took the man into the shadows. But it came with a price. He was stabbed, fatally.
He came back out of the shadows, bleeding and dying. His sister was there, and he managed to speak his final words to her. The healer of the good group came down, but reached him right as he died, when it was too late.
His final words were:
I love you. I always have and all I ever wanted was for you to be happy and safe. And I know I know Ive failed at that so many times. But this at least I know you will be okay. Whatever you do, do it with all your heart. Live your life. And please remember me for who I was not who I am
Chance ended up a hero. He had messed up a lot of things in his short life, but he tried his hardest. Thanks to him, his sister, the one person he cared for most, is alive and well.
Here's to Chance, a messed up, but devoted and loved brother.
